Change the Hermit to Female?
Hello! I'm directing a production of Young Frankenstein this summer and I have a ton of talented girls (a good amount of boys too) but I'm considering changing the Hermit to a girl -- would this be weird? The option would be that she would be a SHE not a HE. This would make Frau Blucher's line at the end be a girl-on-girl line. Which I think could be funny. Thoughts???

Anyone who's done this musical before, what did you do with the orchestra for the songs that need to sync up with video ("Lina's Film Would You", "Kathy's "Would You"" and ""Would You" Finale (Film)")? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Musical recommendation - elementary
Good morning, everyone. After a successful first-time school production of Disney's The Jungle Book KIDS, I am considering directing another musical next year. I want to share my joy of music and the theater to the children. Since I am volunteering my time and our school doesn't have a budget for the program, I want to keep it simple without sacrificing quality. This year, I directed the musical by myself with some teachers designing the set, as well as parents making their child's own costumes. I am leaning towards choosing Annie KIDS but am also thinking about Sleeping Beauty KIDS. My concern with both of these choices is that I am afraid I might scare off some boys because they might perceive them as "too girly." Since, prior to this year, the school has not had a play or musical, I want to build up interest and encourage the broadest base of participation possible. (The license does not appear to be available in Europe for other musicals I considered: Aladdin KIDS, 101 Dalmatians KIDS or Willy Wonka KIDS.) There are also some JR selections that are interesting to me--for example, Alice in Wonderland, Honk!, and the upcoming Peter Pan--but I am concerned that since they are twice as long that they might be too much for me to take on. I appreciate anyone's thoughts or suggestions.

Painting Flats
We are doing Annie Kids and have three 6' wide x 8'high flats and one being made. One side will Warbucks Mansion and the other NYC. I an a little concerned since I have never done this and there will be teachers (not art) and parents assisting. The NYC flats will also be used to hide the mansion furniture to avoid big scene changes. Any advise on how to help this go smoothly?

Rent the School Edition
Our school is contemplating proposing RENT: TSE for our fall musical. We have roughly 2,500 students in medium size city in Wisconsin. We are looking to find other schools who have produced RENT as a means to address questions we may have. We have strong student support for the show, but we are mindful of the community reaction. Here are some questions that we have;1) What rationale did you use in the proposal of RENT?2) Did you have issues with males or females playing the roles of: Angel, Collins, Maureen?3) If you produced the show, did you receive any backlash from teh community, or were they pretty supportive?Any recommendations or personal antidotes about your production will be helpful for us in making our decision. Our plan is to overview the perusal, and then we would like to talk to some of the schools that produce the show before pitching the show to our administration. If we receive teh go ahead, we will have a student and parent meeting to talk about why we are doing the show.
