Inspiration

Anne of Green Gables, like many movie and television series before it, is based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 bestselling novel of the same name. Since its publication, the novel has sold more than 50 million copies, been translated into 20 languages and become one of the most popular and iconic children's books of all time.

After being approached with the idea and reading the book through, the show authors fell in love with the story, commenting, "It's kind of a children's story but it has so much in it that's for adults too. It's just very heartwarming and a delightful story."

Productions

Anne of Green Gables, based on the internationally renowned book of the same name, premiered Off-Broadway on March 29, 2007, at New York City's Lucille Lortel Theatre, where it ran as a five-week engagement through May 5, 2007. The musical was produced by TheatreWorks USA, America's foremost not-for-profit professional theatre for family audiences, with music by Nancy Ford and book and lyrics by Gretchen Cryer. This team previously wrote the long-running Broadway musical, I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road.

Following its well-received Off-Broadway run, Anne of Green Gables then went on to a successful three-month national tour in 2008.
