Audition Central: The Phantom Tollbooth JR.

Script: Azaz

(notices MILO and TOCK)
AZAZ
Well, what have we here?

MILO
(nervously)
My name is Milo and this is Tock. Thank you for seeing us, your Majesty. Your palace is totally cool!

ADVISORS
(in sequence)
Charming!
Lovely!
Handsome!
Gorgeous!

AZAZ
Silence!!

(The ADVISORS freeze. AZAZ addresses each in turn.)

Leave us! Go! Get out! Buzz off!

(to MILO and TOCK, anxiously)

Well, what do you think of my beautiful kingdom?

MILO
To tell the truth, your Majesty, everything is so confusing!

AZAZ
(sadly)
How true. Since Rhyme and Reason were banished, nothing seems to make sense any more.

MILO
Maybe you could let Rhyme and Reason return.

AZAZ
Ah, how nice that would be. Even if they were a bother at times, things always went so well when they were here.

MILO
(blurting it out impulsively)
Maybe Tock and I can set them free.

TOCK
We'll be happy to try!

AZAZ
(snaps out of his wistful revery)
I'm afraid it can't be done.

MILO
But why not?

AZAZ
Much too difficult. Why, you would have to go to Digitopolis and persuade the Mathemagician to agree to release the two Princesses. And he will never agree to anything that I agree to. Never! Even if he did, you would still have to go through the Mountains of Ignorance where the demons live and from whence few have ever returned! Then a fearful climb up a two thousand step stairway to the Castle in the Air a climb so terrifying that the demons themselves won't risk it!

(TOCK S alarm rings; he turns it off.)

MILO
(sobered)
That doesn't sound so easy.

AZAZ
No. I couldn't ask that of you.
